Record-Breaking MENA Climate Week Reflects Region’s Commitment to Inclusive Global Climate Action Ahead of COP28

MENA Climate Week 2023 wrapped up today after five action-packed days. MENA Climate Week 2023 marks the highest-ever attendance of any UN Regional Climate Week in the world with over 9,000 attendees of 137 nationalities participating in over 240 sessions.

HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, opened MENA Climate Week showcasing the MENA region and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s progress, ambition, and enthusiasm on climate action. Among the attendees were Ministers and organizations from around the world, who all highlighted the importance of the MENA region discussions ahead of COP28 – to be held in Dubai, UAE.

Youth organizers, leaders, and participants played a prominent role during the event, delivering speeches, moderating discussions, and announcing comprehensive programs. MENA Climate Week 2023 served as a successful platform to share ideas and solutions on climate action.

Three major announcements were revealed during MENA Climate Week, all working towards advancing global climate goals: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Greenhouse Gas Crediting and Offsetting Mechanism (GCOM), the Roadmap to Reaching the Saudi Green Initiative’s 10 Billion Tree Target, and the Empowering Africa initiative, which builds upon the foundation of the Clean Fuel Solutions for Cooking program.

Six Memorandums of Understanding among parties were signed over the five days including between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy and the Republic of India cooperating on electrical interconnectivity, green/clean hydrogen, and supply chains.

With the conclusion of the programming and participation at MENA Climate Week 2023, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stands ready to carry forward the momentum showcased this week. The Kingdom will continue to foster holistic and inclusive climate action, ensuring the engagement at COP28 is collaborative, transformative, and open to all solutions that will tackle the pressing global challenge of climate change.
