In the presence of HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Minister of Energy, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed today between the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Defense for developing renewable energy projects in the latter’s facilities, ensuring the readiness of the transmission infrastructure, conducting the essential pre-development studies, and overseeing the tendering and awarding processes for these projects.
The MoU was signed on behalf of the Ministry of Defense, by H.E. Assistant Minister for Executive Affairs Dr. Khalid bin Hussain Albayari, and on behalf of the Ministry of Energy, by Assistant Minister Hamdan bin Hazaa Al-Otaibi.
The MoU aims at supporting and encouraging renewable energy projects at the Ministry of Defense’s facilities. With its teams of specialists, the Ministry of Energy will assess the resources and transmission infrastructure, conduct the required environmental, geological, and hydrological studies and evaluations. It will also determine the type of technology and its investment feasibility.
The MoU was signed in recognition of the importance of developing renewable energy policies and strategies, and overseeing and regulating the projects at the facilities of the Ministry of Defense, as well as the importance of undertaking the pre-development preparatory work such as sites selection, assessment of resources and transmission infrastructure, conducting environmental, geological, hydrological studies, and handling the tendering and awarding processes.
It is noteworthy that the Kingdom aims at achieving the optimal, most-efficient energy mix in power generation, by replacing the liquid fuel used in electricity production with gas and renewables, each planned to have a share of about 50% by 2030.
