The Saudi Pavilion at the COP26 conference organized today an event titled, “Addressing climate change: the circular carbon economy (CCE) framework”. The session showcased the Kingdom’s various climate efforts.
The Circular Carbon Economy was introduced by the speakers as a comprehensive, integrated, inclusive and practical approach to controlling CO2 emissions. It can be applied, the participants noted, in accordance with the priorities and circumstances of each individual country.
The CCE is based on 4R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Remove. It aims at ensuring access to cleaner, more sustainable and more affordable energy through a wide range of energy solutions and technologies, driven by research, development and innovation.
As for the Kingdom’s efforts in this regard, the session discussed the CCE National Program, which consists of three strategic objectives. Through this program, the Kingdom aims to address climate change by effectively utilizing the CCE framework, to mitigate the social and economic impact by creating value from CO2 and promoting new industries, and to be a global climate leader through international cooperation.
The Saudi Green Initiative, the panel pointed out, is charting a course for the Kingdom to effectively protect the planet, by harnessing nature-based solutions. The initiative includes planting 10 billion trees and restoring around 40 million hectares of degraded land.
The Red Sea Project, which is set to become the world’s largest tourist destination, will be 100% powered by renewables all-year, the speakers also said. When complete, the project aims through clean transportation solutions to be carbon negative.
