Riyadh Hosts the 2nd Symposium on Reducing Emissions in Petroleum Industry

The second symposium on “Pathways to Reduce Carbon Emissions in the Petroleum Downstream Industries,” organized by the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) and sponsored by the Ministry of Energy, kicked off today, building on the success of the first edition held in Riyadh in 2024.
The symposium witnessed broad participation from OAPEC member states, international organizations and bodies, more than 15 global companies specializing in carbon emissions reduction technologies, and representatives from around 20 Arab and foreign countries. Nearly 140 experts and stakeholders attended, with 23 technical papers scheduled to be presented, highlighting the latest developments in this vital field.
Deputy Minister for Sustainability and Climate Change at the Ministry of Energy Eng. Khalid Almehaid opened the symposium with a speech congratulating the organization’s General Secretariat on its recent developments.
Al-Mehaid stressed the need for integrated climate strategies to balance energy security, affordability, and environmental objectives. He also indicated the need for deployment of all clean energy technologies to achieve net-zero goals to achieve such balance.
In his remarks, AEO Secretary General Eng. Jamal Al-Loughani highlighted the role of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy and the guidance of Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman in the success of the first symposium, which paved the way for the second edition and advanced regional and international dialogue on emission reduction strategies.
The organization of this symposium reflects OAPEC's commitment to advancing sustainable development, fostering cooperation, and expanding international collaboration opportunities to identify practical solutions that reduce carbon emissions while meeting global energy demand.
